Jazz Composers Academy
Jazz Composers Academy is a year-long educational program dedicated to nurturing the next generation of jazz composition talent. The Academy recruited 32 promising young musicians, offering them opportunities to learn from masters and have their original works professionally performed and recorded.
Throughout the program, participants engaged in a journey of self-inquiry and discovery, exploring the limitless possibilities of jazz composition. Under the mentorship of Hong Kong’s “Godfather of Jazz” Ted Lo, Artistic Director Alan Kwan, and seasoned industry veterans Scott Murphy, Nicholas Bouloukos, and Ricky Wong, students developed and brought their original works to life.
The program culminated in a showcase concert at Hong Kong City Hall in December 2023, where professional jazz musicians and students shared the stage to perform selected works for a live audience. In addition to the showcase, we organized a school tour, bringing these original compositions to local schools and inspiring young jazz enthusiasts.
The students’ compositions were also produced into an album, Jazz Composers Academy Mixtape, released on major streaming platforms. This album features 32 original pieces born from the program, each uniquely creative and offering a glimpse into the musical imagination and stories of its composer.
